The Union Government has initiated the process for constituting the 8th Pay Commission, which will be put into action in the year 2026. The commission will consider the remuneration and allowances payable to the central government employees and pensioners. It is further reported that the committee would submit its report to the government by the end of 2025, after which the new salary rules will come into effect from 2026.

What Will Be Special In The New Pay Commission?

The eagerly awaited reforms brought forth by the 8th pay commission will majorly include:

  • Modifications in the pay structure: Basic pay and dearness allowance (DA) are to be redefined.
  • The pension rules may also be improved: A new method of calculation may benefit more pensioners.
  • Alteration of allowances and grade pay: The allowances and grade pay are to be revised for different posts.

How Much Can The Salary Increase?

Salary is expected to increase from 20 to 25% as compared with the 7th Pay Commission, although no such announcements have been made yet. As per media reports, the government is mulling over the salary increase as per the demands of the employees.

Will OPS Replace NPS?

While the employee unions are pushing for it, the 8th Pay Commission is not going to abolish the National Pension System (NPS) and introduce the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). What will happen is some sort of improvement to NPS to provide better returns to employees.
